Welcome to OSINT UK, a community dedicated to fostering open-source intelligence (OSINT) capabilities in the UK. These guidelines are designed to ensure that our members adhere to high ethical standards, legal compliance, and community cohesion while promoting continuous learning and innovation. By joining OSINT UK, you agree to abide by these guidelines and contribute positively to our mission.

Core Principle: Ethical OSINT

At OSINT UK, we are committed to ethical conduct in all our activities. Our community thrives on integrity, transparency, and respect, ensuring that all open-source intelligence work is conducted responsibly and in alignment with our Charter.

Membership Eligibility

  • Potential members must be of good moral character, demonstrating integrity and professionalism in their interactions within the community.
  • Individuals must be over the age of 18.
  • Membership is open to anyone interested in OSINT, including but not limited to professionals, students, hobbyists, and enthusiasts.
  • Applicants must submit a completed membership application form. Incomplete applications will be notified and must be completed within 14 days for consideration.
  • A minor vetting process will be conducted to ensure the suitability of applicants. This process is informal and does not involve any investigation.
  • Individuals with a history of criminal or civil judgments related to unethical OSINT practices are ineligible for membership.
  • Membership is not available to individuals currently or previously involved in subversive organisations or those whose objectives conflict with the mission of OSINT UK.

Ethical Standards

  • Integrity: Members must commit to honesty, respect, and transparency in all interactions, upholding the community's reputation for unbiased and competent integrity.
  • Lawful Compliance: Members must understand and adhere to all relevant UK legal requirements, including data protection laws, and communicate any legal restrictions clearly.
  • Professional Conduct: Members must not engage in actions that could damage the professional reputation of colleagues, employers, or the community. They must act in a manner that supports the community's objectives and prevents any subversion of its mission.
  • Privacy and Security: Members must respect individual privacy, handle personal information with care, and ensure secure information management. Sensitive information should only be shared with appropriate consent.

Responsibilities and Ownership

  • Members must ensure they have the necessary knowledge, resources, and suitability to complete their work thoroughly and responsibly.
  • Members retain responsibility for the information they collect and report, ensuring accuracy and ethical handling.
  • Feedback and Improvement: Members are encouraged to provide constructive feedback to improve community practices and standards continuously.

Community Cohesion

  • Mutual Support: Members should foster a supportive environment, helping each other and responding to community needs.
  • Collaborative Growth: Members are encouraged to share knowledge and best practices, enhancing the collective expertise of the community.
  • Empowerment and Innovation: Members should actively work to advance the goals of OSINT UK and protect the community from actions or behaviours that undermine its purpose and values.

Membership Conduct and Discipline

Any member found violating these guidelines may be subject to disciplinary action, including suspension or termination of membership.

Members have the right to appeal disciplinary actions, which will be reviewed by an impartial committee.

Operational Transparency

OSINT UK will operate transparently, with decision-making power given to the community. Day-to-day operations will initially be managed by founding members, with eventual involvement of volunteers or an executive committee if necessary.

Financial transparency will be maintained, with all funds reinvested into community operations and no dividends paid to members.

Commitment to Excellence

Members should strive for excellence in their work, promoting the objectives of OSINT UK and continually seeking ways to improve.

Members must engage in ongoing education and development to stay current with best practices and advancements in the OSINT field.
