How to Use OSINT to Investigate UK Vehicles
What OSINT Can (and Cannot) Tell You About UK Vehicles
First of all, even the most hardline OSINT advocate will agree that OSINT will not get you everything. With only a few limited exceptions, unless you are working in law enforcement or operating a car park, you are unlikely to be legally able to obtain the keeper details of who owns a motor vehicle in the UK.
However, there are a number of useful online resources which may help when researching vehicles in the UK. Many of them are listed on UK-OSINT Motor Vehicle Research Resources.
Alongside the resources are techniques to help maximise the amount of information you can locate, often for free.
Below, we will go through a number of techniques and websites that may help further your investigations.
Identifying a Vehicle from an Image
Sometimes you may locate an online post or photograph of your subject with a vehicle that is only partially shown, meaning you cannot identify the make and model.
In these circumstances, you can use a cropped version of the image showing only the vehicle and conduct a reverse image search using standard search engines such as Google. Alternatively, specialist vehicle recognition sites may provide better results, including:
These tools may help identify a vehicle’s make and model from a photograph.
Researching Partial Registration Numbers
At other times, you may locate an online post or photograph that only shows a partial registration number.
If you wish to identify the full registration, resources such as:
can be useful.
These sites allow searches using a partial UK vehicle registration number. Unknown characters can be replaced using a ?, which will return possible registration matches alongside:
- vehicle make,
- model,
- and colour.
This information may assist in identifying a vehicle’s full registration number.
If you are only missing one or two characters anywhere within the registration number, these free services are often sufficient. Both services also offer paid functionality for users who are missing additional characters or want to filter results by make, model, or colour.
Researching a Vehicle Registration Number
Sometimes you may locate a vehicle registration number and want to understand more about the vehicle. Several useful resources exist for researching UK vehicles, including:
These services can provide details, including:
- vehicle make and model,
- first registration date,
- date of last ownership change (when the V5/logbook was last issued),
- MOT expiry,
- and vehicle tax status.
In some cases, a vehicle may show as registered, but details such as make, model, V5, MOT, and tax status appear blank. This may indicate that the vehicle has since been assigned a different registration number.
In other cases, a vehicle may be taxed but show no MOT history despite being more than three years old. This may indicate that the vehicle is exempt from MOT requirements under road traffic legislation, which could suggest specialist use, such as a police vehicle.
Reviewing MOT History
Sites such as CarVeto and Car Analytics also include vehicle MOT history.
This may include:
- pass or fail results,
- recorded mileage,
- advisory notices,
- and the dates when the tests were carried out.
Reviewing MOT history can sometimes provide useful insight into a vehicle’s use and condition over time.
Checking Vehicle Insurance Status
The site MIB Vehicle Insurance Check, operated by the Motor Insurers' Bureau, also allows, under certain circumstances, free checks to determine whether a vehicle is currently insured.
Searching for a Registration Number Online
Do not forget to search the registration number itself on search engines using:
- the registration with spaces,
- the registration without spaces,
- and across multiple search engines.
This may reveal:
- vehicle sale adverts,
- forum discussions,
- or references on enthusiast websites.
It is also worth searching vehicle registrations on platforms such as:
- PistonHeads
- Rate Driver UK
These searches may reveal information about vehicle ownership, usage, or sale history.
London Tribunals and Vehicle Research
Another useful resource is London Tribunals. This site lists appeals and adjudications relating to parking and congestion charge notices in London.
If your subject lives, works, or frequently travels into London, it may be worth searching to see if they have appealed a parking or congestion charge notice.
To search:
- Visit the website.
- Select Statutory Registers.
- Click Search.
- Search by the individual’s name.
Search results often include:
- vehicle registration number,
- location,
- date,
- and the time of the offence.
Other local authorities may operate similar public databases.
Training Exercise
Exercise 1: Partial Registration Searches
Using:
Search your own vehicle registration number, leaving out one or two characters and replacing them with a ?.
Review the results and consider how few matches correspond with your vehicle’s:
- make,
- model,
- and colour.
This may demonstrate how useful these resources can be during investigations.
Exercise 2: Vehicle Background Checks
Using:
Search your own vehicle registration number and identify:
- when the vehicle was first registered,
- when ownership changed,
- and the vehicle’s MOT history.
Exercise 3: Practice on Example Vehicles
Try the same techniques on the vehicles shown below:
